Vern Spevak

About Vernon A Spevak Jr.

Vern Spevak is a graduate of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Il. where he was awarded a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance, while on a four year, full tuition scholarship.  Mr. Spevak was a member of the internationally acclaimed NIU Jazz Ensemble, where he performed and toured with many world class musicians, including jazz legends  Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Bellson.

Vern Spevak is the education director of Spevak Percussion Concepts, Inc., one of the Midwest’s largest and most widely acclaimed privately owned percussion schools. Located in Oswego, IL the 6000 square foot, one acre facility offers both private and semi-private instruction to students of all ages and ability levels.

As a private instructor and clinician, Mr. Spevak remains highly in demand as a percussion consultant to many schools throughout the Chicagoland and Northern Illinois area. Vern Spevak is the former Director of Percussion Studies for Naperville Central High School, a position held from 1994 to 2005.  Mr. Spevak is the original founder and producer for “Drumshow,”  the annual school concert event which to date continues to receive widespread accolades from education professionals at all levels.

As a performer, composer/arranger, studio musician and instructor, Vern Spevak has been a repeat guest clinician for the IMEA Jazz Festival (Illinois Music Educators Association), and is the former faculty drum set instructor for the Birch Creek Music Center, in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin.  Mr. Spevak spent two decades (80′s and 90′s) as a bandleader and music contractor and has performed in all of the top hotels and other elite social venues throughout the Chicago metropolitan area as a featured drum set soloist, arranger and lead vocalist.  As a free lance percussionist, Mr. Spevak has been a featured soloist and performer with Motown legend Mary Wilson (of the Supremes) and NBC Tonight Show host Jay Leno.

As an adjudicator, Mr. Spevak was a member of the 1996 Drum Corps Midwest  (DCM) judges guild, and has served as a contest festival judge in many jazz, concert and marching band events.

Mr. Spevak is a Christian artist and was the drummer, percussionist and lead vocalist in the contemporary Christian band “Providence” which released  a debut CD, titled  A Message To The World. The album features 7 original compositions written by Mr. Spevak. In the summer of 2005, Mr. Spevak traveled to Africa (Kampala, Uganda), as a missionary,  working with orphaned African children.  While in Africa, Mr. Spevak undertook an informal study of Ugandan music and drumming and while there, performed at many schools throughout Kampala and other outlying areas.

Throughout the years, Vern Spevak has won countless awards and high recognition for his percussion skills which include a Chicago Emmy Award for a performance on WTTW (Channel 11 Chicago), which was filmed and performed with drumming legend Louis Bellson.

Mr. Spevak’s current product endorsements include VicFirth Inc. (drumsticks and mallets) and Remo Inc.(drum heads and World percussion instruments).

Aaron Spevak

Aaron is the current assistant director of Spevak Percussion Concepts, Inc.- a family owned business in Oswego, IL. Spevak Percussion Concepts, Inc. is one of the largest privately owned percussion schools in the Midwest, specializing in the instruction of drumming and percussion instruments. Aaron represents the 7th consecutive generation of professional drummers in his family. During his high school career, Aaron received many awards and honors for his musical talents.  In 2005, Aaron received top honors for his solo marimba playing at the Assemblies of God 51st Council Fine Arts Convention in Denver, CO. Shortly thereafter, at just fifteen years old, Aaron auditioned and was selected to tour (summers 06 and 07) with the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps, from Dubuque, IA. In 2007, Aaron was selected to perform with the US Army sponsored All American Marching Band. The All American Marching Band selects the nations ninety top high school marching band musicians from all over the country for this honorary half time performance.  Soon after, in the fall of 07, Aaron fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a member of the world class Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, from Rosemont, IL. During pre-season 2008, Aaron also performed over the winter months with the Cavaliers sponsored indoor percussion group, Green Thunder. Performing both marching snare drum and front ensemble keyboards, Aaron was honored at seasons end by both staff members and peers at a post season ceremony by being selected for the Most Outstanding Musician award.

In the winter of 2009, Aaron was a performing member of Redline, an indoor percussion group from Canton, MI. Aaron was the center marimba and section leader of the front ensemble for all three of his seasons (09.10.11).  The 2010 summer marching season led Aaron to Fort Mill, S.C. where he toured with the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps. Carolina Crown is considered another DCI drum corps powerhouse and was selected as the fan favorite drum corps in the DCI network 3 times in the past 5 years.  In 2011, Aaron was selected to perform in the front ensemble (timpani) with the 14 time world champion Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, from Concord, CA.  During the touring season with the Blue Devils, Aaron was the recipient of a gold medal for his I & E (solo and ensemble) performance.  With his original timpani composition titled “SIX,” Aaron received the highest score across all the captions of 300 participants including color guard, brass, woodwinds, vocal and all percussion.  With a score of 98.5, Aaron also set a record for the highest timpani score ever awarded in the history of Drum Corps International.

Aaron currently is working toward his bachelor’s degree in music and wishes to continue his love of teaching and his passion for music as a career.  Aaron recently returned from a brief stay at Anton Bruckner University, in Linz, Austria where he is hoping to continue his collegiate studies under the tutelage of marimba virtuoso Bogdan Bacanu.  Aaron will return to Austria in the winter of 2012.
